Rihanna reportedly wanted to perform a free concert in memory of the late Freddie Gray, but Baltimore police blocked her. According to The Baltimore Sun, in messages released and dated on May 1, the former head of media relations for Baltimore police Capt. Eric Kowalczyk, outlined his conversation with Rihanna.

He explained in the report that she wanted to throw a free concert, and walk with the protesters in a show of solidarity. The concert was brought up again in a situation report which was also dated May 1, where it was effectively turned down because there was no “permit.” Prince did end up playing a a show a few days later at the Royal Farms Arena (which was streamed on TIDAL), while Rihanna posted a picture of a black police officer with tears in his eyes on her Instagram.
